There’s a wide variety of environments, from Imperial detention centres to rank subterranean hideouts complete with gross, tentacled beasties. What’s great about the overall aesthetic is that it’s based solely on the original trilogy, and that’s it. Predating The Phantom Menace by four years, Dark Forces isn’t bogged down by iconography and lore introduced in the prequel or sequel trilogy Disgaea 5 Complete Switch NSP It makes for a more grounded experience (albeit one that is no longer part of official canon). The only real criticism I have is that you still can’t save in individual levels. Admittedly, they are not very long, but if there is a problem in one place and you have to leave, you may have a problem. Or if you just get tired in between. In this sense, you only save after completing a level, which unlocks the next mission. There are individual checkpoints in a level, but only for a respawn after death As the icing on the cake, this successful new edition also includes a little bonus material. The same applies here again: The “safe” is not overflowing with extras, but it does have some information, artwork and the like to offer. But the highlight is undoubtedly the playable Avenger bonus level. This is the interior of a Star Destroyer. This level, which was designed as an introductory mission, was originally playable as a demo at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), but did not make it into the final game. It was a pleasure to relive this game. It was always a bit like Doom, but the force was with him. The subtle improvements suit it well and make Dark Forces perfectly playable on modern platforms. There are also a few nice extras, the bonus level in particular stands out. The only downer is the lack of a save function within the missions, but that is also quite bearable It is still one of the best Star Wars shooters today. Of course, whether this is worth stumping up the extra £20-odd over the £5 1995 ‘Classic’ Edition will probably be mostly down to a matter of convenience. The behind-the-scenes Vault features are quite sparse and poorly presented, consisting of concept art, old sketches, early 3D models, cutscene renders and other things that will make you go, ‘Huh, well that’s neat,’ for all of five seconds and then never opening that menu screen ever again I can only recommend this remaster to those who have already played Dark Forces back then and to everyone for whom it would be their first time.  It’s the sort of stuff that will likely only appeal to the hardest of hardcore Star Wars-er, but even that feels like a bit of a stretch. The one highlight is the playable prototype of its old CES demo, The Avenger, which is set inside a Star Destroyer-like ship with lots and lots of Stormtroopers to shoot.
