Requiem is a dark third-person action-adventure game set in an alternate timeline of 14th-century France during the Hundred Years’ War, carrying on the eerie, scuttling footsteps of its predecessor, A Plague Tale: Innocence. To save your brother, you must travel through both beautiful and dystopian landscapes, escape a tsunami of plague rats, and sneak or murder your way past an army of half-witted troops.You play as Amicia, the older sister of a troubled and afflicted little boy named Hugo. You’ll spend your time in considerably more memorable puzzle-based areas, where you’ll use light sources to navigate through hordes of ravenous, man-eating rats, or tiptoeing past foes that may kill you nearly instantly in competent but uninspired stealth action. The finest parts, however, combine these two components and have you deal with soldiers that are stupid enough to want to kill you while you are surrounded by a situation you would think would worry them much more, in addition to the horrifying flood of rats. Between all of that action, you’ll solve the wildly strange and overly complicated mystery of your brother’s illness. Axiom Verge 2Along the way, you’ll come across endearing characters, some of whom are complex and well-written, others of whom are insane sociopaths who just want to kill you because they think the world is terrible and everything is terrible. If you thought the first Plague Tale was gloomy, this sequel is so dark and gloomy that it makes the first one seem optimistic and wide-eyed in contrast. It’s very exhausting to have your dreams crushed for twenty hours while you’re constantly betrayed, maimed, forced to watch the people you care about die, and subjected to horrors that would break a normal person in minutes, even though Amicia, Hugo, and the companions they meet along the way never seem to lose hope and form heartwarming bonds of comradery as the world collapses around them.Despite this, the novel is still incredibly beautifully told and full of memorable scenes that had me gaping open and looking to the imaginary referees, waiting for them to throw a flag because it was too extravagant. The script and performances are so good that it’s difficult not to feel anything, good or bad, for the entire ensemble. I also loved the powerful and ill-tempered Amicia and really wanted to fight to defend her adorable brother Hugo like he was my own blood. This entertaining adventure had a few rather confusing passages and odd meandering sections, but in the end, I was relieved that I had endured the horrors of rat hell in exchange for the story I received. Baldur’s Gate: Dark AllianceI wanted to spend more time exploring this destroyed planet and hanging out with my NPC companions because of the story’s excellent graphics, music, and voice acting. It’s difficult to exaggerate how amazing Requiem is, both visually and sonically. When it uses all of its computing capacity to send a million rats hurtling toward you, the ensuing night terrors were nearly worth it. My only complaint is that, at times, Requiem is so ambitious that my Xbox Series X found it difficult to keep up and occasionally froze for many seconds at a time, particularly when there were a lot of rat shenanigans going on.In terms of gameplay, Requiem doesn’t really set itself apart from Innocence, but it does a fantastic job of improving the current design. The typical stealth action scenes where you have to sneak around or kill soldiers intelligently to advance toward an objective are some of the lesser parts. It’s not dull in the slightest to use Amicia’s sling, crossbow, and bag of alchemical tricks, but it also doesn’t do anything that I haven’t seen in other stealth games. Typical tactics for the genre include using fire to set harmful objects on fire in the surroundings to eliminate dangers, distracting foes with boulders, and sneaking up on them to kill them.To be fair, there are a few unique methods you can use your alchemy bag to completely destroy your adversaries, such as the Extinguis powder that puts out fires and exposes close enemies to thousands of tiny teeth mauling them, but the majority of these strategies aren’t unique to the series. Requiem’s only really noteworthy improvement is the ability for NPC companions to combine your stealth options with their unique special powers. Arnaud, a soldier, can be ordered to engage adversaries in open combat, while one ally, Lucas, can shock enemies with his Stupifacio powder. It helps to keep the otherwise rather by-the-numbers stealth somewhat more intriguing as whichever individual you happen to be facing at any given moment in the story will likely influence how you handle certain barriers.
