Visual fidelity and performance are other matters entirely. Cracks in the window dressing become harder to ignore when the plot and game mechanics themselves are pretty weak, and I don’t like to admit that Trails through Daybreak II is the first Legend of Heroes game I’ve played where my motivation to finish the story basically dried up after about a dozen hours. It’s tough not to find their particular shtick a little extra compared with the cast we already have from the first Daybreak, and I regularly found myself longing to spend more time with Van, especially in the early to mid-game. The narrative structure of Daybreak II employs multiple sections within each chapter that involve different party members; you do get that variety, but Nadia and Swin just aren’t as compelling as Van is. Even one of the principal antagonists is essentially just a red version of Van’s Grendel, which is a letdown. The central plot this time revolves around Van and company tracking down the last of the eight Genesis devices, created by Agnes’ great-grandfather, Professor Epstein. This last device also seems to have a connection to the Crimson Grendel a beast that has an eerie resemblance to Van’s Grendel form and its accompanying red fairy. The story expands with its share of twists, turns, and intrigue, but at its core, Daybreak 2 is about obtaining the final Genesis and discovering the truth behind this other Grendel. A Time Traveller’s Guide To Past Delicacies Switch NSP As someone who admittedly wasn’t the biggest fan of the first Daybreak’s story (most of my issues were with its antagonists, the mafia group Almata), I enjoyed the sequel far more in this regard. However, I did find it lacking in new locations to explore, as the vast majority of your time is spent revisiting places from the previous game. Trails characters have always been one of the shining highlights of the series, and nearly all of the cast from the first Daybreak returns in its sequel while also giving far more screen time to ancillary characters from the previous entry. Aaron remains one of my favorite characters of the Calvard arc, with some fantastic lines, some of which borderline on self-aware fourth-wall breaking, speaking thoughts that Trails fans worldwide can relate to. I loved spending more time with characters like Shizuna (aka the Divine Blade of Silver) and the two Dominions, Celis and Leon. Shizuna, in particular, won me over with her carefree, “I’m just doing this because why not” attitude, which is so distinctly different from her fellow Divine Blades. I can’t wait for future games to show her interacting with her more serious peers like Rean or Cassius. A Tale of Synapse: The Chaos Theories Switch NSP Daybreak 2 deepened my love for the characters I had already grown attached to, and it even improved my feelings toward characters like Agnes, whom I was rather unimpressed with in the previous game takes place shortly after the events of the previous game, following your mercenary hero Van Akride and his friend Elaine as they encounter a mysterious but familiar-looking red monster. In an entertaining twist, that first encounter actually ends with both Van and Elaine dead, with Van’s assistant, Agnes, somehow rewinding time in an act of desperation to save them. It’s an explosive setup that introduces the timeline-hopping mechanic in an interesting way. But rather than making the most of a multiverse’s potential for effective and emotional storytelling like the excellent Zero Escape series, Daybreak 2 mostly uses it as a deus ex machina to let the party opt out of sticky situations. Meanwhile, Agnès Claudel is searching for the eighth and final Genesis, with her and Van eventually reuniting and joining forces to tackle both of their problems together. This is when things go in a completely new direction for the series, as the party discovers that the Genesis can cause a strange phenomenon that rewinds time. Over the course of the narrative, the group or certain NPCs will die, but thanks to the Genesis’ power, they’re able to go back to moments before their deaths and take a different approach. It’s a bold new direction for the franchise, but unfortunately, one that doesn’t really pay off. The overall plot is still incredibly engaging and, at times, dark, but I can’t say I was a huge fan of the time-bending story beats. It could have been a unique gameplay element, but instead, it is mainly used at scripted points throughout the adventure, which is just a little disappointing.
